A decade ago, the poorest 20% of Americans could consume more than the average Canadian (food, health care, etc.). With Trudeau's Carbon taxes, life will get even harder for Canadians.
Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border. In fact, not many poor Americans live near the Canadian border so why does that Thin Red Line make such a difference?
As the study suggests, one of the highest correlates is energy prices.
Trudeau's Carbon Tax is $30 a tonne at present and will escalate to $170 per tonne over 8 years (467% increase despite promising zero pre-election). Rebates are currently $4 a week.
Worse, a second carbon tax (CFR) next year will cost Canadians an additional $20B with no rebates - CFR alone will increase home heating 60%. Home heating is not optional in Canada. Sales taxes are charged on these taxes and no heating fuel exempt. There are divisive variations by Province.
This regressive (hurts poor disproportionately) tax is applied throughout the production chain. Comparable programs do not exist in the large carbon emiitting competitor countries making exports and jobs (private sector) even more scarce.
Trudeau's Liberal Ontario advisors doubled electricity prices - a ban on winter disconnections was necessary as hundreds of thousands of households were cut-off or at risk. Frozen corpses don't get ya votes! Ontario - now the most indebted Sub-National in the world still adds debt to maintain prices.
Trudeau admits "Even if Canada stopped everything tomorrow, and the other countries didn't have any solutions, it wouldn't make a big difference." Canada is a Carbon sink, - if the issue is global, countries such as China or Saudi Arabia be paying Canada. Canada's only previous long term experience with carbon tax is BC - emission remainded constant. Carbon tax revenues are often not even spent on environmental initiatives.
Massive Carbon pricing in Canada clearly makes zero environmental sense. Big Government Socialism using "environmentalism" to make citizens dependent on (a bankrupt) Government and its "adored" leader is hardly novel. Trudeau has copied socialist strategies in the past.
At least the lowest 10% or so of Income earners in the US can brag "At least I'm not poor in Trudeau's Canada!" as the Canadian standard of living plummets.
